Guwahati, 10 July (HS): Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the state government has set an ambitious goal of securing UNESCO recognition for Bihu, the Vaishnavite culture of Majuli and the historic Ahom capital of Rangpur in Sivasagar, following the successful inscription of the Charaideo Moidams as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Addressing a press conference at the Assam Legislative Assembly Conferance Hall after the Budget session, the Chief Minister said the initiative aims to preserve Assam's cultural legacy while giving it greater international visibility. The proposals will be pursued under UNESCO's cultural, natural and intangible heritage categories.
The 2026–27 Budget also outlines a series of heritage conservation measures, including the early completion of the Rang Ghar Conservation Project and restoration and visitor infrastructure development at Kareng Ghar. The government will provide funds for the comprehensive development of Madhupur Satra and establish the Assam Satra Commission to strengthen the state's Vaishnavite institutions.
To promote Assam's culture beyond the state, the government will organise a grand Bihu celebration in New Delhi and support the production of feature films on Ahom commander Lachit Barphukan and freedom fighter Swahid Kushal Konwar. The concluding ceremony of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika's birth centenary celebrations will also be held in the national capital.
The government said these initiatives are aimed at preserving Assam's rich heritage while boosting cultural tourism and enhancing the state's global identity.-----------
