Hooghly, 01 July (H.S.): Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Rishra Police conducted a major operation late Tuesday night and arrested seven notorious criminals from the Rishra, Serampore, and Uttarpara areas. Firearms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons were recovered from their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Rohit Sharma alias Rahul (18), Md. Sahil alias Madda (25), Bittu (26), Suraj Bahadur Thapa (25), Subir Nandi alias Papai, Md. Chand Hussain (33), and Md. Ashfaque alias Raj (22).
According to the police, all the accused are habitual offenders with previous involvement in several criminal cases registered at different police stations in the surrounding areas. Preliminary investigation has also revealed that they are associates of the notorious criminal gangs headed by Ramesh Mahato and Kamal Deb.
A case has been registered against the accused under the relevant provisions of law. On Wednesday, all seven accused were produced before the Court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), Serampore, with a prayer seeking 10 days' police custody to facilitate further investigation, trace other members and leaders of the gang, and recover additional firearms, ammunition, and other incriminating materials.
