New Delhi, 01 July (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to the country's medical fraternity on the occasion of National Doctors' Day, praising doctors for their dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to public service while highlighting the government's efforts to strengthen India's healthcare system over the past decade.
In a message marking the occasion, the Prime Minister said doctors form the backbone of India's healthcare system and continue to earn the trust and gratitude of millions through their tireless service, often under the most demanding circumstances.
He said the medical profession has played a vital role in safeguarding public health and improving the quality of life for people across the country. Commending healthcare professionals for their selfless contribution, Modi acknowledged their commitment to serving patients with compassion and professionalism.
Highlighting reforms in the health sector, the Prime Minister said India has made significant progress in expanding its healthcare ecosystem during the last ten years. He noted that the number of medical colleges in the country has more than doubled, while both undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats have increased substantially.
According to the Prime Minister, the expansion is creating greater opportunities for aspiring doctors, strengthening the country's healthcare workforce, and improving access to quality medical education. He said these initiatives are helping ensure that better healthcare services reach people across every part of the country.
Looking ahead, Modi said doctors will remain central to India's journey towards becoming a developed nation. He emphasised that the medical community will continue to play a crucial role in promoting preventive healthcare, advancing medical research, adopting innovative technologies, and delivering affordable and accessible healthcare to all citizens.
National Doctors' Day is observed across India every year on July 1 to honour the invaluable contribution of doctors and commemorate the birth and death anniversary of renowned physician and former West Bengal Chief Minister Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose legacy continues to inspire generations of medical professionals.
