New Delhi, June 5 (HS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday extended his greetings to the nation on the occasion of World Environment Day and praised all those dedicated to environmental conservation. He said the day serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the collective commitment to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable development.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi said that government initiatives undertaken over the past decade have led to an expansion of green cover across the country and a notable increase in the populations of several wildlife species. He emphasized that the people of India have achieved remarkable progress in environmental conservation through collective efforts, effective policies, faith in science, and innovation.

The Prime Minister said that India takes pride in its rich biodiversity. He noted that the country's diverse ecosystems support countless species and provide livelihoods to millions of people. Referring to conservation efforts aimed at protecting the Great Indian Bustard, Snow Leopard, Sloth Bear, and cheetahs, he said that sustained commitment can successfully restore wildlife populations and fragile ecosystems.

Modi highlighted that initiatives such as “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in Mother's Name) have played a significant role in increasing forest cover by nearly 119,000 hectares annually. He said that inspired by the principle of “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” India will continue working toward building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future in line with the spirit of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

Linking environmental protection with Indian cultural values, the Prime Minister shared the Sanskrit verse:

“Madhū Vātā Ṛtāyate Madhukṣaranti Sindhavaḥ,

Mādhvīrnaḥ Santvoṣadhīḥ.”

He said that conservation of nature is not merely a responsibility but a fundamental principle of Indian culture and values. Explaining the meaning of the verse, Modi said it conveys the wish that the air around us remain pleasant and beneficial, rivers continue to provide life-sustaining water, and medicinal plants and vegetation serve as the foundation of health and well-being for all living beings.

The Prime Minister added that the message reflects India's age-old tradition of living in balance and harmony with nature and reinforces the country's enduring commitment to environmental stewardship.
