Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight at the recognition of Jai Prakash Narayan Bird Sanctuary (Surha Tal) in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh, as India’s 100th Ramsar site. He said the designation is proof of the nation’s commitment to conserving wetlands and the natural environment.
On Friday, marking World Environment Day, the Prime Minister wrote on X that Surha Tal is an important habitat for many migratory and resident bird species, which increases its ecological significance. He added that this achievement has brought global recognition to India’s wetland conservation efforts.
PM Modi said that in recent years initiatives based on community participation, science, innovation and public awareness have been strengthened for wetland conservation and revival. He noted that these efforts are helping conserve biodiversity, maintain ecological balance and secure a greener future for coming generations.
