NEW YORK, June 3 (HS): The Senate of the U.S. state of New York has passed a historic resolution concerning India's Independence Day. Through Resolution No. 1935, the Senate has urged Governor Kathy Hochul to officially proclaim August 15, 2026, as “India Independence Day” in the state. During the proceedings, lawmakers paid tribute to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and praised the contributions of the Indian-American community in the United States.

According to details available on the New York Senate website, the legislative body has passed a resolution formally recognizing August 15, 2026, as India Independence Day. The move reflects the growing strategic partnership between India and United States, as well as the increasing influence and contributions of the Indian community in New York.

The resolution honors India's rich cultural heritage, civilizational values, and democratic traditions. Legislators particularly recalled the ideals and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the global symbol of non-violence and freedom. The Senate also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Indian-American community to New York’s development, economy, and society. The passage of the resolution is being viewed as a strong symbol of the deepening bilateral relationship and cooperation between the United States and India.

Senator Jeremy Cooney urged Governor Kathy Hochul to officially designate August 15, 2026, as “India Independence Day” in New York State. He noted that India gained independence from the British Empire on August 15, 1947, after nearly 200 years of colonial rule marked by oppression, sacrifice, and struggle.

The Senator stated that India's independence holds profound significance for people around the world, representing not only freedom from colonial rule but also the culmination of a 90-year struggle to secure strong civil, political, and economic rights, as well as the right to self-determination.

He further noted that the Constitution of India was adopted and enacted on November 26, 1949, establishing a framework that balances a strong central government with the autonomy of individual states. He added that Indians observe Constitution Day each year and suggested that the people of New York should join Indian communities in celebrating that occasion as well.

Senator Cooney also requested that copies of the resolution be forwarded to the Consul General of India and various Indian organizations based in New York State.
