Malappuram, 03 June (H.S.): Former Kerala Minister and Independent MLA K.T. Jaleel on Wednesday announced that he and his wife have formally joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist), describing the decision as a political and ideological commitment at a time when the Left movement faces growing challenges.

In a social media post, Jaleel said both he and his wife had accepted party membership, asserting that a strong Left movement remains vital for safeguarding the interests of weaker sections of society and religious minorities.

The former minister noted that the CPI(M) has been subjected to intense criticism following its recent electoral setbacks and is currently facing opposition from what he described as right-wing and communal forces. He argued that any weakening of the Left camp would ultimately hurt vulnerable communities the most.

Drawing a parallel with West Bengal, Jaleel said the decline of the Communist movement there had led to a political vacuum. He claimed that while the Trinamool Congress emerged after the Left’s decline, its dominance proved temporary and that the Bharatiya Janata Party has since become the principal political force in the state. He warned against a similar situation developing in Kerala and stressed the need for the Communist movement to remain vibrant and politically influential.

Jaleel also said his decision to join the CPI(M) reflected his opposition to individuals who, he alleged, exploit religion and religious symbols for personal gain, political power and social influence rather than upholding their moral and spiritual values.

He further stated that many people are willing to associate themselves with a political movement during periods of success, but standing with a party during difficult times is a greater test of commitment.

“Remaining on the sidelines when the party is facing major challenges, instead of standing alongside the countless selfless comrades who continue to support it, would be a grave injustice to society,” Jaleel said.

The announcement marks a significant political move by Jaleel, who has long been associated with the Left Democratic Front while remaining outside the formal structure of the CPI(M).
