New Delhi, 26 June (H.S.): Domestic stock markets remained closed on Friday on account of Muharram. As a result, no trading took place on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) or the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) also remained closed during the morning session due to the holiday. However, trading on the MCX resumed in the evening session from 5:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. and 11:55 p.m., as per the applicable commodity trading schedule.

According to information released by the stock exchanges, Muharram has been designated as a trading holiday for several segments on the BSE, including the Equity Segment, Equity Derivatives Segment, Currency Derivatives Segment, New Debt Segment – Reporting, Settlement and Trading Platform (NDS-RST), and Tri-Party Repo. Trading in the Electronic Gold Receipts (EGR) and Commodity Derivatives segments also remained suspended during the daytime session. However, trading in these segments resumed during the evening session from 5:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 11:55 p.m.

Similarly, the NSE remained closed across all major segments, including Equities, Equity Derivatives, Corporate Bonds, New Debt Segments, Negotiated Trade Reporting Platform, Mutual Funds, Securities Lending and Borrowing Schemes, Currency Derivatives, Commodity Derivatives, and Interest Rate Derivatives. While all these segments remained closed for the day, commodity derivatives resumed trading during the evening session from 5:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and 11:55 p.m.

According to the stock market holiday calendar, there are no additional market holidays in June after Muharram, apart from the regular weekend closures on Saturdays and Sundays. There will also be no market holidays in July and August other than the weekly holidays. The next trading holiday will fall on September 14 on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Thereafter, the stock market will remain closed on October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti and on October 20 for Dussehra. Trading will also remain suspended on November 10 for Bali Pratipada and on November 24 for Shri Guru Nanak Dev Gurpurab. The final market holiday of the year will be observed on December 25 for Christmas.

This year, Independence Day on August 15 falls on a Saturday, while Diwali falls on Sunday, November 8. Since both occasions coincide with regular weekend holidays, they are not included separately in the stock market holiday calendar. However, Muhurat Trading will be conducted on Diwali despite it falling on a Sunday. The timing for the Muhurat Trading session will be announced at a later date.
