Guwahati, 22 June (HS): After failing to secure relief from the Gauhati High Court, Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key accused in the case related to the death of Assam’s celebrated musician Zubeen Garg, has moved the Supreme Court seeking bail.
Sources said Mahanta has filed a petition before the apex court challenging the rejection of his bail plea. The matter has been listed for hearing on Tuesday, with the Supreme Court expected to take up the case tomorrow.
The development comes amid ongoing judicial proceedings in the high-profile case. Earlier, the Special Fast Track Court had denied bail to four other accused — Sandipan Garg, Amritprabha Mahanta, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — directing that they remain in judicial custody pending completion of the trial.
Before approaching the Supreme Court, Mahanta had sought bail from the Gauhati High Court. The plea was heard by Justice Mitali Thakuria, who reserved the order after considering detailed arguments from both sides. While the defence pressed for Mahanta’s release on bail, Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia strongly opposed the application on behalf of the prosecution.
The case, stemming from the death of renowned singer and composer Zubeen Garg in September 2025, has drawn widespread attention across Assam. With proceedings continuing in multiple courts, further legal developments are awaited.-----------
