Shillong, 21 June (HS): Relentless rainfall continued across Meghalaya over the past 24 hours, with Mawsynram in East Khasi Hills district receiving a staggering 530 mm of precipitation, making it one of the wettest locations in the state during the period.
Data released by the weather department showed widespread heavy rainfall across several districts. RKM Sohra recorded 470 mm of rainfall, while Mawkyrwat received 390 mm. Other areas reporting significant rainfall included Shella (100 mm), Williamnagar (90 mm), Mawryngkneng (90 mm), Jowai (80 mm) and Barapani and Ratacherra with 70 mm each.
The incessant showers also triggered damage to a section of the Shillong–Dawki national highway near Laitlyngkot, around 35 kilometres from Shillong. Officials said a portion of the road was washed away by rainwater, disrupting connectivity to Dawki near the India-Bangladesh border.
Although no casualties or injuries have been reported, traffic movement on the affected route has been severely impacted. Restoration efforts are underway, with teams from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (NHIDCL) and contractors working to repair the damaged stretch and restore normal connectivity.
Authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation as heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of the state.------------
