
Bhubaneswar, 21 June (H.S.): Police have registered a case against a student in connection with the alleged suicide of a girl student at a private engineering college under the jurisdiction of Golanthara Police Station in Odisha's Ganjam district.
The accused, identified as Biswajit Jena, has been booked under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with the abetment of suicide. According to reports, Biswajit Jena is the nephew of Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena.
The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the deceased student's maternal uncle. In the complaint, it was alleged that Biswajit, a final-year BCA student of the same institution, was in a romantic relationship with the deceased student, who was pursuing her third-year BCA course.
As part of the investigation, police have seized the victim's laptop and mobile phone and collected CCTV footage from the hostel premises. Investigators are examining the digital evidence to ascertain the circumstances that may have led to the student's death.
According to police sources, the student was found in a critical condition in the college hostel on Saturday morning and was immediately rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur. However, doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Following the incident, police officials visited the college campus and questioned the victim's friends, classmates, and acquaintances to gather further details regarding her personal and academic life, as well as any events preceding the tragedy.
Confirming the development, Berhampur Superintendent of Police Shravan Vivek M. said, “A third-year BCA girl student died at a private college under the jurisdiction of Golanthara Police Station. The girl's uncle has lodged an FIR against Biswajit Jena in connection with the incident. The post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the investigation is currently underway.”
Police have stated that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly examined and further action will be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
