Guwahati, 21 June (HS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asserted that Assam, once perceived as a remote and insecure region, has now emerged as a major attraction for tourists and investors from across India and abroad under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Addressing a press conference at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson Pranjal Kalita said the state has witnessed remarkable transformation due to sustained peace, development and improved connectivity. He noted that more than a dozen peace accords signed with various organizations have helped establish a stable and secure environment in Assam.
Kalita stated that Prime Minister Modi’s visit and overnight stay at the renowned Kaziranga National Park significantly enhanced the global visibility of Assam’s tourism sector. According to him, around 5.48 lakh tourists visited the park during 2025-26, while more than 70 lakh passengers used Assam’s airports in the previous year.
The BJP spokesperson further highlighted that the recent decision by the European Union to lift travel restrictions on Assam for citizens of its member countries marks a major milestone for the state's tourism industry. He said the announcement came after a European Union delegation visited Assam earlier this month and assessed the prevailing peaceful environment. Similar restrictions imposed by countries such as Australia and Japan had also been withdrawn earlier.
Kalita said initiatives such as the promotion of homestays, inclusion of the Northeast in the Buddhist tourism circuit, hosting of international concerts and organization of major sporting events including IPL matches have contributed to Assam’s growing popularity among domestic and international visitors. These measures, he added, have also created new avenues of employment and entrepreneurship for the youth.
He emphasized that under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s tourism sector has entered a new phase of growth, strengthening the state's economy and generating greater livelihood opportunities for its people.-----------
