Rome, 02 June (H.S.):
A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of southern Italy in the early hours of Tuesday, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
According to seismic monitoring agencies, the earthquake occurred beneath the Mediterranean Sea near southern Italy. The tremor originated at a depth of approximately 253 kilometres, making it a relatively deep-focus earthquake. Deep earthquakes are often felt across a wide geographical area but generally cause less surface damage than shallow quakes of similar magnitude.
Residents in several parts of southern Italy reported feeling the shaking during the early morning hours. Social media users described brief but noticeable tremors, though emergency services did not immediately report any major incidents linked to the earthquake.
Italy is one of Europe's most seismically active countries due to its location along the complex boundary between the African and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country has experienced several devastating earthquakes throughout its history, including the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake and the 2016 Central Italy earthquake, both of which caused significant loss of life and widespread destruction.
Seismologists noted that the latest quake's considerable depth likely reduced its impact on populated areas. Nevertheless, authorities continue to assess the situation and monitor the region for possible aftershocks.
Emergency management agencies have urged residents to remain alert and follow official safety guidance should further seismic activity occur. Infrastructure inspections are expected to be carried out in areas where the tremors were felt most strongly.
The earthquake serves as another reminder of Italy's vulnerability to seismic events and the importance of preparedness measures in regions prone to geological activity.
