Sonitpur (Assam), 18 June (HS): Despite a series of police crackdowns and arrests, illegal cattle smuggling continues to persist in Behali. Police informed on Thursday that in a fresh operation in the morning today, Borgang Police intercepted a container truck and rescued 59 cattle allegedly being transported illegally.
According to police sources, a naka checking operation was being conducted near Centre Point under Borgang Police Outpost at around 6 a.m. Acting on a specific tip-off, police stopped and searched a 10-wheeler container truck bearing registration number AS 26AC 0884.
During the search, police found 59 cattle packed inside the vehicle in extremely cramped and inhumane conditions. During interrogation, the driver reportedly admitted that the cattle were being transported illegally from Gogamukh towards Nagaon. He also failed to produce any valid documents related to the transportation of the animals.
Following the seizure, police took custody of both the vehicle and the rescued cattle and brought them to Behali Police Station for further legal proceedings. An investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other members of the smuggling network involved in the operation.
Notably, Behali Police have been carrying out sustained drives against illegal cattle transportation in recent weeks, leading to the seizure of several cattle-laden vehicles and the arrest of multiple suspects. However, the latest incident indicates that the smuggling network remains active despite intensified enforcement efforts.----------
