Guwahati, 17 June (HS): Anticipating the arrival of nearly eight lakh devotees for the annual Ambubachi Mela at the revered Kamakhya Temple, the Assam government has rolled out extensive measures covering accommodation, security, traffic management, sanitation and public health to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog said three major camps have been set up to house pilgrims and visitors during the event. Infrastructure upgrades, including road resurfacing and carpeting works, are underway, while a public announcement system has been installed to assist with crowd regulation and information dissemination.
The state administration has placed special emphasis on cleanliness and sanitation in and around the temple complex. Dedicated facilities have also been arranged for senior citizens and differently-abled devotees to make the pilgrimage more accessible and convenient.
To maintain food safety standards, Food Inspectors will monitor eateries and food stalls throughout the mela period. Highlighting the state's tourism growth, Neog noted that Assam has already welcomed around 85 lakh domestic tourists and over 42,000 foreign visitors so far.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jayanta Sarathi Bora, announced a comprehensive traffic plan, stating that only emergency vehicles will be permitted beyond Nursery Point. Vehicles carrying food supplies will be allowed movement between 11 pm and 5 am. Ferry services through the Pandu route and from Sonaram School Playground have also been arranged to facilitate pilgrim movement.
Several traffic diversions and parking regulations will remain in force during the festival. Authorities have prohibited roadside parking and designated specific parking zones to manage the expected rush.
The Tourism Department Commissioner and Secretary Diganta Bara informed that devotees will be allowed to proceed towards the Kamakhya Temple between 5 am and 6 pm. He also warned that strict action would be taken against anyone found under the influence of alcohol or narcotic substances.
Officials further stated that devotees entering the temple premises must remove their footwear in keeping with the sanctity of the shrine.
