New Delhi, 15 June (HS): The Centre has barred industrial, commercial and institutional consumers from purchasing petrol and diesel through retail fuel outlets and directed them to procure supplies from authorised bulk sellers.
The decision follows an order issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas under the Motor Spirit and High Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026.
Under the order, oil marketing companies and fuel retailers have been instructed to restrict bulk purchases of petrol and diesel through retail outlets for periods of up to 90 days.
According to officials, the measure has been taken in view of unusually high growth in fuel demand, particularly diesel, in certain regions.
The government observed that some bulk consumers had shifted fuel purchases to retail outlets because of price differences, placing additional pressure on supplies at petrol pumps.
Officials said the move is aimed at ensuring smoother availability of fuel for retail consumers and better management of fuel distribution.
