Global markets signal positive trend; Asian equities trade higher


New Delhi, 15 June (HS): Global markets witnessed a positive trend on Monday following confirmation of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran. US, European and Asian markets traded higher amid expectations of easing geopolitical tensions and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

US markets ended the previous session in positive territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 353.51 points, or 0.70 per cent, to close at 51,202.26. The S&P 500 rose 0.50 per cent to 7,431.46, while the Nasdaq advanced 0.31 per cent to settle at 25,888.84.

Dow Jones Futures were also trading higher, gaining 436.46 points, or 0.85 per cent, to reach 51,638.72.

European markets also witnessed sustained buying during the previous session. The FTSE index rose 167.84 points, or 1.60 per cent, to close at 10,471.72. The CAC index gained 150.07 points, or 1.80 per cent, to end at 8,350.87, while the DAX climbed 425.59 points, or 1.73 per cent, to 24,635.30.

Asian markets also traded firmly in the green, with all major regional indices posting gains.

Gift Nifty was up 302 points, or 1.28 per cent, at 23,930.50. Singapore's Straits Times Index gained 1.03 per cent to reach 5,077.44.

South Korea's Kospi recorded a sharp rise of 441.80 points, or 5.44 per cent, to trade at 8,565.42, while Japan's Nikkei surged 3,205.96 points, or 4.86 per cent, to 69,226.

Elsewhere, Jakarta Composite Index advanced 4.12 per cent to 6,255.39, Taiwan Weighted Index jumped 2.70 per cent to 45,361.74, Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.92 per cent to 4,068.58, Hang Seng Index rose 0.48 per cent to 24,837, and Thailand's SET Composite Index traded 0.23 per cent higher at 1,596.08.
