New Delhi, 14 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said India has made significant strides in expanding access to affordable and quality healthcare over the past 12 years, emphasizing that the government remains committed to strengthening healthcare services and building a healthier nation.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said the country has focused on making healthcare more accessible and affordable for citizens across all sections of society. He added that the government would continue to advance initiatives aimed at improving public health outcomes and ensuring better medical care for all.

Modi expressed particular pride in the Ayushman Bharat programme, describing it as the world’s largest healthcare initiative. He said the scheme has become a symbol of India's commitment to providing high-quality medical treatment to the most vulnerable sections of society.

Launched in 2018, Ayushman Bharat seeks to provide financial protection against major health expenses for millions of economically disadvantaged families. The programme offers health insurance coverage for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization and has emerged as a key pillar of the government's healthcare strategy.

The Prime Minister noted that India’s healthcare sector has undergone substantial transformation in recent years through expanded health infrastructure, greater availability of medical services, increased digital integration and enhanced access to affordable treatment. Efforts have also been made to strengthen primary healthcare networks and improve the reach of medical facilities in rural and underserved regions.

According to government data, initiatives undertaken over the past decade have included the establishment of new medical colleges, expansion of healthcare facilities, promotion of digital health services and increased support for preventive and affordable healthcare programmes.

Modi said the government's focus remains on ensuring that quality healthcare reaches every citizen regardless of economic background. He reiterated that continued investment in healthcare infrastructure and welfare programmes would play a crucial role in achieving the vision of a healthy and prosperous India.

The remarks came as the government highlighted achievements in the healthcare sector during the past 12 years, with Ayushman Bharat continuing to be presented as one of its flagship social welfare initiatives aimed at expanding healthcare access across the country.
