Heavy rains in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, 14 June (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall at isolated places across Kerala on Sunday, prompting authorities to issue a yellow alert in four districts. Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam are expected to receive heavy showers during the day.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall refers to precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Along with the rain, isolated areas are likely to experience thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant as lightning poses a significant threat to life and property. Residents have been advised to disconnect electrical appliances from power sources during thunderstorms and avoid contact with electrical equipment. The use of telephones during lightning activity should also be avoided as a precautionary measure.

The weather department further cautioned against outdoor activities when the sky remains heavily overcast. Children and adults have been advised not to play in open spaces, terraces or other exposed areas during periods of thunderstorm activity. People have also been warned against fishing, swimming or entering water bodies when lightning is reported in the vicinity.

Meanwhile, adverse weather conditions are expected to prevail over parts of the Arabian Sea. Strong winds with speeds ranging between 45 kmph and 55 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph on some occasions, are likely over the Somalia coast, Oman coast, the central-west Arabian Sea and adjoining southwest and northwest Arabian Sea regions.

Fishermen and those engaged in marine activities have been advised to closely monitor official weather updates before venturing into the sea. Disaster management authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to exercise caution and follow safety advisories issued by local administrations as Kerala continues to experience active monsoon conditions.
