Guwahati, 14 June (HS): The BJP on Sunday welcomed the Assam government's proposed move to regulate footpath-based retail businesses in Guwahati and ensure greater participation of indigenous people in the sector.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters, senior party spokesperson Brajen Mahanta said the NDA government is committed to safeguarding the interests and future of Assam's indigenous communities. Referring to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's remarks at a media conclave held on June 13, Mahanta said a survey is likely to be conducted between August and September this year to identify roadside retail establishments operated by non-local and outsider traders.
He stated that a large number of footpath vendors are currently operating in Guwahati without proper regulation. According to the BJP leader, many of these businesses are allegedly run by people from outside the state, resulting in unregulated commercial activity, tax evasion and growing pressure on civic infrastructure.
Mahanta further claimed that indiscriminate occupation of footpaths has contributed to traffic congestion, obstruction of public movement and drainage-related issues in several parts of the city. He said the proposed survey aims to bring roadside businesses under an organised framework and create opportunities for indigenous residents.
The spokesperson also highlighted the Chief Minister's announcement regarding the relocation and systematic management of footpath vendors at designated locations, including areas beneath newly constructed flyovers and other sites identified by the administration. He said preference would be given to indigenous people in such arrangements.
Welcoming the Assam Cabinet's recent decision to restrict Aadhaar enrolment for persons above 18 years of age through a stricter verification mechanism, Mahanta described the move as a significant step towards protecting Assam's demographic and social interests. He asserted that the measure would help prevent misuse of government welfare schemes by illegal migrants and unauthorised entrants.
Mahanta said the BJP-led NDA government remains firm in its commitment to protecting the rights and interests of Assam's indigenous population and will continue to take policy measures aimed at securing their socio-economic future.
BJP spokespersons Banendra Kumar Mushahary and Pranjal Kalita were also present at the press conference.--------------
