
New Delhi, 14 June (H.S.):
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Section Engineer (SSE) of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in Silchar, Assam, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹20,000 from a contractor.
According to the CBI, the contractor lodged a complaint on June 13 alleging that a bill worth approximately ₹20 lakh was pending with the engineer for approval. The complainant stated that during a meeting on June 12 regarding the clearance of the bill, the railway official allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹20,000 in exchange for processing and approving the payment.
After verifying the allegations, the CBI registered the case and laid a trap. The agency subsequently caught the accused, identified as Kuntal Chakravarty, Senior Section Engineer (Carriage and Wagon), Northeast Frontier Railway, Silchar, allegedly while accepting the bribe from the contractor.
The accused was taken into custody and is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Guwahati on June 14.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing, officials said.
