Thiruvananthapuram, 13 June (H.S.): Kerala is likely to witness isolated heavy rainfall and strong winds till Sunday under the influence of twin cyclonic circulations and an associated trough system over south India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Saturday.

The weather agency has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph in isolated parts of the State and advised the public to remain cautious.

Heavy rainfall is expected in Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Saturday, while Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki and Thrissur districts are likely to receive intense showers on Sunday. A Yellow Alert has been issued for these districts as a precautionary measure.

According to the IMD, a cyclonic circulation that was earlier located over the north Tamil Nadu coast has now shifted over northern coastal Tamil Nadu. A trough extending from the system has formed near Latitude 11 degrees north over the adjoining sea region. Another cyclonic circulation continues to persist over south coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring areas.

Meteorologists said the combined influence of these weather systems is expected to enhance moisture inflow and atmospheric instability over Kerala, resulting in widespread rainfall activity during the next two days.

The IMD cautioned that thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds could cause localised disruptions, including uprooted trees, power outages and traffic difficulties. Residents in low-lying areas and regions vulnerable to flooding, waterlogging and landslides have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official weather updates.

Fishermen and those engaged in outdoor activities have also been urged to exercise caution in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Officials said rainfall intensity may vary across districts depending on the movement and strength of the weather systems affecting the region.
