Jagiroad (Assam), 12 June (HS): Tata Electronics' upcoming semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district is poised to become a game-changer for Assam's economy and India's electronics sector. With an investment of ₹27,000 crore (USD 3.6 billion), the project is expected to position the Northeast on the global semiconductor map while strengthening India's ambition of becoming a major player in the global chip supply chain.
Spread across 171 acres at the former Nagaon Paper Mill site, the facility is India's first indigenous greenfield semiconductor assembly and test unit. Commercial production is scheduled to begin in 2026 itself, with the plant capable of manufacturing up to 48 million semiconductor chips daily using advanced technologies such as Wire Bond, Flip Chip and Integrated Systems Packaging (ISP).
The project is expected to generate more than 27,000 direct and indirect jobs, creating significant employment opportunities for local youth and skilled professionals. Industry experts believe the semiconductor unit will trigger the growth of ancillary industries, logistics networks, technical training centres and support services across Assam and the wider Northeast region.
Beyond regional development, the facility is set to enhance India's self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing, reducing dependence on imported chips. The plant will cater to growing demand from sectors such as electric vehicles, telecommunications and network infrastructure, while chips manufactured in Assam are expected to be exported to key markets including Japan, the United States and Germany.
Officials view the project as a milestone in India's technological advancement, marking a major step towards building a robust domestic electronics ecosystem. The arrival of global supply chain partners and component manufacturers around the facility is also expected to attract fresh investments, further boosting industrial growth and economic activity in Assam.
The semiconductor plant is widely regarded as one of the most significant industrial investments in the Northeast, with the potential to reshape the region's economic landscape and establish Assam as a strategic centre for high-tech manufacturing in India.
