Bhubaneswar, 12 June (H.S.): Former Gunupur MLA Ramurty Gomango passed away on Friday morning at the age of 76 while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.

According to sources, Gomango breathed his last early morning on Friday . He had been suffering from hypertension and diabetes-related complications. Following a deterioration in his health, he was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar two days ago and was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital for advanced treatment.

A prominent political figure from Rayagada district, Gomango represented the Gunupur Assembly constituency on two occasions. He was first elected as a Janata Dal candidate and served from 1990 to 1995. He later returned to the Assembly as a BJP legislator during the BJD-BJP alliance government, serving from 2000 to 2005.

Gomango's political career was overshadowed by a long-standing criminal case related to the death of his wife, Shashirekha Gomango. Her half-burnt body was recovered from the bathroom of their residence while she was pregnant. Although Gomango maintained that it was a case of suicide and alleged political conspiracy against him, the investigation later led to murder charges under Sections 302 and 201 of the Indian Penal Code.

After a prolonged legal battle spanning nearly three decades, a Special Court in Bhubaneswar on June 27, 2023, convicted Gomango of murder and destruction of evidence. The verdict was based on witness testimonies and circumstantial evidence presented during the trial.
