Imphal, 11 June (HS): Widespread anger and grief have swept across Manipur following the recovery of the bodies of six Naga civilians who had been missing for nearly a month. Various community organisations, civil society groups and leaders have strongly condemned the killings and demanded strict action against those responsible.
According to reports, the six victims were among those abducted from Leilon Vaiphei on May 13, this year. Their bodies were handed over on June 10 after they were allegedly killed by suspected militants. The development came a day after the release of 24 abducted Kuki civilians, raising hopes that the Naga hostages would also return safely. However, the discovery of their bodies has triggered widespread outrage across the state.
Condemning the incident, Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen described the killings as a brutal and inhuman act that has deeply shocked society. She said such atrocities have no place in Manipur and are contrary to the principles of humanity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence.
Expressing sorrow over the deaths, Kipgen stated that the killing of six innocent Naga civilians was a tragic loss that had deeply affected the collective conscience of the people. She said the incident represented a grave assault on the values cherished by all communities.
The Deputy Chief Minister appealed to all sections of society to reject violence and work together for the restoration of peace and harmony in the state. She stressed that the most meaningful tribute to the victims would be to foster greater understanding, compassion and dialogue among different communities.
Emphasising the need for reconciliation, Kipgen said Manipur must continue to uphold unity and hope despite the challenges facing its people. She also conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and urged citizens to remain calm and committed to building a future free from fear, hatred and recurring cycles of violence.------------
