Kamrup (Assam), 01 June (HS): Akkas Ali (40), arrested for the alleged rape of a 10-year-old girl in South Kamrup, was injured in police firing after he attempted to escape from custody. According to the Kamrup District Superintendent of Police, who addressed a press conference on Monday, Akkas Ali was arrested last night. He was being taken to Chhaygaon early this morning for further interrogation. At Kukurmara along the route, the accused tried to snatch a weapon from the police personnel and attempted to open fire. A bullet fired during the scuffle hit the police vehicle.To control the situation, police retaliated and shot him in the leg, successfully recapturing him. He was immediately rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment.The incident has triggered strong public anger across the region. Local residents are reported to have vandalized the accused’s house in South Kamrup. The area remains tense following the incident, but police have deployed heavy security to maintain law and order. Investigation into the case is continuing.------------
