The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the suspicious death of a young female inmate at a remand home in Deoghar district, Jharkhand. The Commission issued notices to the state's Chief Secretary and Deoghar Superintendent of Police (SP), seeking a detailed report within two weeks.

NHRC stated that according to media reports, on May 2, the condition of a 19-year-old female inmate at a remand home in Deoghar's Charkhi Pahari area suddenly deteriorated. Remand home staff rushed her to Deoghar Sadar Hospital, where she died during treatment. The cause of death remains undetermined.

Reports indicate five inmates have died at this remand home since January 1, 2026, raising serious questions about its safety and management.
