The Ministry of External Affairs stated on Thursday that comments by Bangladesh ministers regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) victory in West Bengal should be viewed in the context of repatriating Bangladeshi citizens illegally residing in India. Bangladesh's Foreign Minister and Home Minister had reacted to BJP's West Bengal win, claiming India would attempt to push people into Bangladesh.
MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during today's press briefing, We have noted the remarks by Bangladesh ministers. These should be seen in the context of sending back illegal Bangladeshis.
The spokesperson emphasized Bangladesh government's cooperation is essential for this process. He informed that nationality verification for over 2,860 cases remains pending with Bangladesh, some for more than five years. He expressed hope that Bangladesh will expedite these verifications to facilitate smooth repatriation.
Responding to a question on Teesta River water sharing, the spokesperson stated India and Bangladesh share 54 rivers. Bilateral mechanisms exist to discuss all water-related issues, with meetings held at regular intervals.
