New Delhi, 07 May (H.S.): Amid ongoing political developments regarding government formation in Tamil Nadu, Congress MP and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi criticized the Governor's position. He stated that according to constitutional tradition and law, the Governor should invite the single largest party to form the government.
Constitutional Obligation
Singhvi asserted that the Governor, as the custodian of constitutional discretion, has no alternative but to summon Tamil Nadu's largest party to form the government. There is no question about it. Law, precedent, tradition, constitutional culture—all dictate this, and it has happened numerous times in the past, he emphasized.
Governor's Standard Practice
He noted, No other coalition has staked a claim, and the shortfall is merely 7-8 seats. Governors always stipulate proving majority on the House floor within 10-12 days. So where is the problem? This erosion of constitutional norms and traditions is highly condemnable, and I say so with regret.
The Congress leader stated this step should have been taken much earlier. Such delays by constitutional functionaries weaken democratic processes and obstruct honoring the people's mandate, he added.
Notably, actor-turned-politician Vijay met the Governor claiming government formation. His party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), received Congress support. Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar stated this decision honors the people's mandate.
However, TVK chief Vijay has not yet submitted letters from the required 118 MLAs for majority. He verbally claimed possessing the necessary numbers.
Sources indicate TVK submitted a letter with 107+5 (112 MLAs) signatures. The Governor asked them to return with 118 signatures, and TVK sought time for this.
