Thiruvananthapuram, 06 May (H.S.): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms across Kerala till Saturday, with isolated places in several districts likely to receive intense rainfall and strong winds.

As part of precautionary measures, the IMD has issued yellow alerts in multiple districts over the next few days. On Wednesday, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts have been placed under yellow alert in view of the possibility of heavy rainfall. The weather department has also predicted rain activity across all districts of the state during the day.

According to the forecast, heavy rainfall is expected on Thursday in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts. On Friday, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Kozhikode are likely to witness strong showers.

The IMD has warned that southern Kerala could experience widespread heavy rain on Saturday. Yellow alerts have been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kottayam districts in anticipation of worsening weather conditions.

Apart from heavy rainfall, gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are also likely during thunderstorms. Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious, especially during lightning activity, which could pose serious risks to life and property.

The weather department urged people to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and thunderstorms and to follow official safety advisories issued by district administrations and disaster management authorities.

The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
