New Delhi, 06 May (H.S.): Domestic stock markets opened with strength today but faced mounting pressure shortly thereafter, causing both the Sensex and Nifty indices to retreat from their upper levels.

The trading session commenced on a firm note, with both benchmarks surging further upon opening; however, profit-taking soon ensued, leading to a downward trajectory.

Despite the selling pressure, both indices sustained positive territory throughout, providing some relief. After the first hour of trading, the Sensex was up 0.34 percent, while the Nifty advanced 0.41 percent.

Key Gainers and Losers

Among major stocks, InterGlobe Aviation, Mahindra & Mahindra, Trent Limited, Bajaj Auto, and Bajaj Finserv traded with gains ranging from 3.17 percent to 1.48 percent. Conversely, Larsen & Toubro, Hindustan Unilever, Titan Company, Power Grid Corporation, and ONGC saw declines between 3.34 percent and 0.64 percent.

Trading Activity Overview

In the session so far, 2,777 shares exhibited active trading, with 1,940 advancing in green and 837 declining in red. Of the 30 Sensex constituents, 23 remained in positive territory supported by buying, while seven faced selling pressure. Similarly, among the 50 Nifty stocks, 41 traded green and nine red.

Index Movements

The BSE Sensex opened 406.57 points higher at 77,424.36 and peaked at 77,675.01 amid initial buying support before succumbing to selling pressure. By 10:15 AM, after the first hour, it traded at 77,279.55, up 261.76 points.

Likewise, the NSE Nifty began 138.20 points stronger at 24,171, climbing to 24,250.85 before profit-booking set in. Despite ongoing volatility, it held green, trading at 24,132.50—up 99.70 points—by 10:15 AM.

On the prior trading day, Tuesday, the Sensex closed 251.61 points or 0.33 percent lower at 77,017.79, while the Nifty ended 86.50 points or 0.36 percent down at 24,032.80 .
