Nagaon/Goalpara (Assam), 30 May (HS): Two persons, including a woman, were killed while three others sustained serious injuries in separate incidents involving wild elephants in Assam’s Nagaon district last night. In another tragic incident, a wild elephant killed after coming into contact with an electric wire in Goalpara district.

According to reports, the incident in Nagaon took place at Kochuwa where a herd of wild elephants attacked local residents, leading to the death of two persons on the spot. Three others who suffered grievous injuries in the attack were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical. The deceased and injured persons identification are yet to be revealed.

Forest department officials and police personnel later reached the area and launched an operation to drive the elephants back into the forest. The incident triggered panic among villagers in the locality.

Meanwhile, in Goalpara district’s Mornoi area, a wild elephant met a tragic end after allegedly being electrocuted by a live electric wire. Locals spotted the carcass of the elephant and informed the forest department.

Forest officials reached the site and initiated an inquiry into the incident. Preliminary reports suspect that the elephant came in contact with a low-hanging or illegally connected electric line, leading to its death.----------
