Thiruvananthapuram, 30 May (H.S.):Kerala is likely to experience isolated spells of heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds until Tuesday under the influence of two cyclonic circulations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
The weather agency has warned that thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in areas prone to waterlogging, lightning strikes, and strong winds.
According to the IMD, a Yellow Alert has been issued for several districts over the next three days. On Sunday, heavy rainfall is expected in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Malappuram districts. On Monday, the alert will remain in force for Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, and Wayanad districts. On Tuesday, Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam districts have been placed under Yellow Alert.
The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.
The department also noted that conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon over the next two to three days. The monsoon is expected to progress into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, the Lakshadweep region, large areas of the Bay of Bengal, and adjoining regions.
Meteorologists attributed the prevailing weather conditions to two cyclonic circulations currently influencing the region. One cyclonic circulation is located over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining areas, while another has formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining Tamil Nadu coast.
The combined impact of these weather systems is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Kerala in the coming days, bringing widespread showers and isolated heavy rain to several districts, the IMD said.
