Chelmsford, May 29 (H.S.): The Indian women’s cricket team produced an impressive all-round performance to defeat England by 38 runs in the first T20 International and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Recovering brilliantly from early setbacks, India posted 188/7 in 20 overs before restricting England to 150/8.

After losing the toss and being asked to bat first, India endured a disastrous start. England pacer Lauren Bell struck in the opening over, dismissing stand-in captain Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma to leave India under immediate pressure.

However, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the innings with an aggressive counterattack. A costly over from England bowler Issy Wong proved to be a turning point in the match, as India collected 27 runs from it. Yastika brought up a fine half-century, while Jemimah played a superb attacking knock of 69 runs.

The pair added a crucial century partnership to place India in a commanding position. Although England attempted a comeback after both batters departed in quick succession during the 14th over, a valuable cameo from Deepti Sharma helped India finish strongly at 188/7.

Chasing 189 for victory, England also got off to a poor start. Kranti Goud and Arundhati Reddy bowled brilliantly to provide India with early breakthroughs, restricting England to just 43 runs in the powerplay.

Amy Jones fought back with a determined innings, reaching her half-century in 32 balls and stitching together a partnership with Heather Knight to keep England in contention. However, the Indian bowlers maintained relentless pressure throughout the innings.

Shree Charani broke a key partnership, while Nandini Sharma struck twice in consecutive deliveries to extinguish England’s hopes. England managed only 30 runs in the final five overs as India comfortably sealed the victory.
