Leipzig, May 28 (H.S.): Crystal Palace clinched the first European title in the club’s history after defeating Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League final on Wednesday night, courtesy of Jean-Philippe Mateta’s decisive second-half strike. The victory also marked a memorable farewell for manager Oliver Glasner.
Crystal Palace had originally secured qualification for the UEFA Europa League following an impressive domestic campaign. However, due to UEFA’s multi-club ownership regulations, the team was moved to the Conference League. Despite the setback, Palace responded brilliantly and produced an outstanding run throughout the tournament to achieve historic success on the European stage.
The decisive moment came in the 51st minute when Adam Wharton’s long-range effort was not fully controlled by Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla. The ball spilled into the path of Mateta, and the French striker calmly slotted home from close range to hand Crystal Palace the lead.
Rayo Vallecano intensified their search for an equaliser after conceding. Yeremy Pino’s free-kick struck both posts, while Jorge de Frutos also came close to scoring. However, Crystal Palace’s resolute defence denied the Spanish side any breakthrough.
Neither team managed a shot on target during the first half. Crystal Palace, however, emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval and eventually found the only goal of the contest.
The triumph marks only the second major trophy in Crystal Palace’s 120-year history. The club has also become the third English side in the last four years to win the UEFA Conference League, following the achievements of West Ham United and Chelsea.
Speaking after the match, manager Oliver Glasner said, “It was an extremely tough and competitive game where a single opportunity made the difference. Our midfielders, Adam Wharton and Kamada, delivered outstanding performances. The move created by Wharton for the goal proved to be the defining moment of the match.”
For Rayo Vallecano, the defeat was deeply emotional as the club had been chasing the first European trophy in its history. Even after the final whistle, their supporters remained inside the stadium for a long time, continuing to applaud and encourage the players.
Rayo midfielder Isi Palazón said, “We should be proud of this entire season. We had an incredible journey. Crystal Palace are a very strong side and they made full use of the opportunity they got.”
