
Singapore, May 28 (H.S.): Two-time Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu delivered a commanding performance to storm into the quarter-finals of the women’s singles category at the Singapore Open Super 750 badminton tournament.
Sindhu defeated Japan’s Riko Gunji in straight games, 21-9, 21-12, in the second-round encounter. The match lasted just 37 minutes, with the Indian star maintaining complete dominance right from the outset.
However, Sindhu is set to face a formidable challenge in the quarter-finals, where she will take on top-seeded South Korean shuttler An Se-young.
Meanwhile, in the men’s doubles category, the fourth-seeded Indian duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the last eight after defeating Chinese Taipei’s pair of Lee Jhe-Huei and Yang Po-Hsuan 21-15, 11-21, 21-18 in a hard-fought contest. The Indian pair produced a brilliant comeback in the deciding game of the one-hour-long match.
Satwik and Chirag will now face the Malaysian duo of Khai Xing Kang and Aaron Tai in the quarter-finals.
In the mixed doubles category, India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also booked their place in the quarter-finals. The Indian pair defeated Japan’s Yuta Watanabe and Maya Taguchi 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 after making a remarkable comeback.
Dhruv and Tanisha will next face the winners of the match between South Korea’s Kim Jae Hyun and Jeong Na Eun, and Malaysia’s third-seeded pair Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei.
