Nagpur, 28 May (HS): Dr Dande Foundation, Nagpur has
taken a novel initiative for protection of plants and distribution of saplings
of rare Indian plants. The initiative launched on the birth anniversary of
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has been named ‘Ek Ped Nati Ke Naam’ (One plant in
the name of grandchild). The saplings will be distributed after onset of
monsoon.
People’s participation, particularly senior
citizens, is expected as the name of the project indicates. Rare species of
plants which are on the verge of extinction, will be distributed, Dr Pinak
Dande, Chairman of the Foundation said. The first plant identified is ‘Krishnawad’
or Makhankatori’ with botanical name Ficus krishnae. The leaves of the plant
are naturally in bowl shape and is believed to have been used by Lord Krishna
to distribute stolen butter to his friends.
Gadkari appreciated the initiative and said
protection of plants is necessary given the rising temperature in urban and
rural areas as well. A few saplings were distributed as a mark of launching of
the project.
Environmentalists and experts in botany are working to
preserve the rare plant species.
Gadkari appealed to the environment-lovers, social
organisations and others to extend help Dr Dande Foundation in its project.
