Hooghly, 28 May (H.S.): The Trinamool Congress has suffered a major political setback in Hooghly district amid growing signs of internal dissent within the party in West Bengal. Bhadreshwar Municipality chairman Pralay Chakraborty, along with eight councillors, resigned collectively from their posts on Thursday, triggering fresh political speculation in the district.

All the councillors submitted their resignation letters to the Executive Officer of the municipality, leading to heightened political activity and uncertainty in the local civic body.

According to sources, dissatisfaction had been growing within the municipality for quite some time over administrative decisions, organisational functioning and local leadership issues. Several councillors were reportedly uncomfortable with the changing political atmosphere and internal developments within the party.

Following the change of government in West Bengal, several Trinamool leaders, councillors and influential local figures have come under the scanner of police and central agencies. Arrests linked to allegations of corruption, extortion and financial irregularities have reportedly increased pressure and unease within sections of the party. Against this backdrop, the collective resignation of the chairman and eight councillors is being viewed as politically significant.

Reacting to the development, newly elected Chandannagar MLA Dipanjan Guha told Hindusthan Samachar that the councillors had understood the public mood and respected the people’s mandate through their decision.

“Everyone should respect public opinion. They felt they would not be able to continue with the government, so they resigned. It was their personal decision,” Guha said.

Political observers believe that if similar dissatisfaction continues to grow within the Trinamool Congress, the party’s organisational strength in Hooghly and other districts could face challenges in the coming days. However, no detailed official statement explaining the exact reasons behind the resignations has yet been issued by the councillors.

The mass resignation at Bhadreshwar Municipality has now shifted attention towards the next political move of the Trinamool Congress leadership and the possible impact on local body politics in the region.
