Thiruvananthapuram, 28 May (H.S): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised the rain warning across Kerala, forecasting heavy rainfall at isolated places in eight districts on Thursday amid intensifying monsoon activity in the State.
According to the latest weather bulletin, southern and central parts of Kerala are likely to receive widespread showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days. The IMD has warned that wind speeds could reach 30 to 40 kmph in several areas till Sunday and urged the public to remain cautious, especially in regions vulnerable to waterlogging, strong winds, and lightning-related incidents.
As part of the precautionary measures, a yellow alert has been issued for eight districts on Thursday. The districts placed under alert are Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur. The weather department stated that these districts are likely to witness heavy rainfall at isolated locations during the day.
The IMD has also indicated that unstable weather conditions are expected to continue over the coming days due to favourable atmospheric conditions over the Arabian Sea and adjoining regions. Residents in hilly areas and low-lying regions have been advised to exercise extra caution in view of the possibility of sudden heavy downpours.
For Friday, rain warnings have been issued for six districts — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Ernakulam — where heavy rainfall is expected to persist. Authorities are closely monitoring the weather situation, and local administrations have been asked to stay prepared for any emergency response measures if required.
The IMD has further advised fishermen, travellers, and those living in landslide-prone regions to stay updated with official weather bulletins and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms.
With the southwest monsoon expected to strengthen further in the coming days, intermittent rain activity is likely to continue across several parts of Kerala through the weekend.
