
Nagpur, 28 May (HS): Three people involved in
illegal trade of Indian elephant tusks were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue
Intelligence, Nagpur Regional Unit. Tusks weighing 4.058 kg were seized from
them. After registering offence under the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, Annexture
–I, the three accused were handed over to the Mysore Range Forest Department
for further action.
Indian elephant, scientifically called Elephas maximus
indicus, is a listed animal in the Act and trade in of anything obtained from
them is prohibited.
The jewellery and articles made from ivory fetches
hefty price in the international market. Trained workers in ivory carving are on
great demand.
