New Delhi, 26 May (H.S.): The Supreme Court has refused to grant an urgent hearing on a petition seeking a ban on cow slaughter and strict implementation of laws prohibiting cow slaughter just ahead of Bakrid.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant observed, “Are you coming just a day before Bakrid for publicity?”
The petition has been filed by former Vice President of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, Satish Kumar Agarwal. It seeks directions for strict enforcement of anti-cow slaughter laws to protect cows and calves from slaughter. The plea also demands issuance of guidelines for regulating slaughterhouses in accordance with the law in every state.
The petitioner’s counsel urged the court to list the matter for hearing on May 27, stating that Bakrid is scheduled just two days later and if the court agrees with their arguments, interim relief could be granted immediately.
However, Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the intent of the petitioner and remarked whether the plea had been filed merely for publicity on the eve of Bakrid.
