Thiruvananthapuram, 23 May (H.S.): Oscar-winning sound designer and filmmaker Rasool Pookutty has stepped down as Chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy following the change in government in the state. His resignation comes barely six months after he assumed charge of the prestigious post.
Pookutty was appointed as Chairman during the reconstitution of the Academy’s governing body after the previous committee completed its tenure. His appointment had drawn significant attention at the time, considering his internationally acclaimed career in cinema and his recognition as one of India’s most celebrated sound designers. However, his relatively short tenure at the Academy has now come to an end with the formation of the new government.
Sources indicate that the government has already begun deliberations over a new leadership team for the Academy. Among the names currently being considered for the chairman’s position are actor Jagadish, actor and comedian Salim Kumar, and filmmaker Deepu Karunakaran. An official announcement regarding the appointment is expected in the coming days.
Before Pookutty’s appointment, filmmaker and actor Prem Kumar had been serving as Acting Chairman of the Academy after director Ranjith stepped down from the post. Prem Kumar had earlier held the position of Vice-Chairman and was entrusted with the responsibilities of the chairman following the vacancy.
The decision to appoint Rasool Pookutty instead of elevating Prem Kumar to the top position had sparked criticism from several quarters at the time. Critics argued that Prem Kumar, who has been associated with the film industry for decades and had served the Academy in different capacities, deserved greater recognition and consideration for the role.
The controversy had generated debate within sections of the film fraternity, with many questioning the selection process and expressing concerns over overlooking experienced figures within the industry. With Pookutty now stepping aside, discussions surrounding the future leadership and direction of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy have once again come into focus.
