Ahmedabad, 22 May (H.S.): Chennai Super Kings bowling coach Eric Simons stated that despite the team’s disappointing campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026, the season provided valuable insights into the squad’s strengths and weaknesses. Chennai’s campaign came to an end on Thursday following an 89-run defeat against Gujarat Titans.
Batting first, Gujarat posted a formidable total of 229 for 4 in 20 overs. In reply, Chennai Super Kings were bowled out for 140 in just 13.4 overs, crashing out of the playoff race.
Speaking after the match, Simons said, “Every player will take something valuable away from this season. As a bowling coach, I prepare detailed reports for all the players so they can work on their weaknesses over the next nine months and return as improved cricketers. We witnessed the same progress with Anshul Kamboj, who came back much stronger after last season.”
He added that the season had helped the franchise gain a much clearer understanding of itself as a unit.
Simons said, “We now understand ourselves far better as a team than before. We have identified what each player is capable of and where the limitations lie. Kartik performed exceptionally well this season, and we were able to closely observe his potential. We already knew a great deal about our experienced players, but this tournament has significantly helped us understand team balance and our style of play.”
Referring to head coach Stephen Fleming, Simons remarked that the season would prove useful in shaping the franchise’s future strategy.
He also cited injuries as a major reason behind the team’s underwhelming performance throughout the campaign. According to Simons, the injury to Jamie Overton disrupted the balance of the side at a crucial stage.
“When the team was beginning to build momentum, Jamie Overton suffered an injury. He was extremely important to our bowling unit and also contributed effectively with the bat. His absence was deeply felt within the team,” he said.
Chennai Super Kings struggled to maintain consistency throughout the season and eventually bowed out of the tournament after finishing in the lower half of the points table.
