NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Twisha Sharma’s Suspicious Death; Seeks Report from Madhya Pradesh Chief Secretary and DGP

New Delhi, 20 May (H.S.): The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports regarding the suspicious death of Twisha Sharma and has written to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh, directing them to ensure an immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the matter. The Commission has also sought a detailed report within seven days.

NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, in a letter issued on Wednesday, condemned the incident and stated that in cases related to dowry harassment and domestic violence against women, any negligence or misuse of influence will not be tolerated, and strict action must be ensured against the accused.

The Commission has sought detailed information regarding the sections invoked in the FIR, the status of arrests and interrogations, steps taken to apprehend absconding accused Sarthak Singh, the status of passport seizure, CCTV footage, call records, electronic and forensic evidence, post-mortem report, and action taken on any previous complaints. It has also directed that the victim’s family be protected from any threats, pressure, or character assassination so that the judicial process can proceed in a fair and unbiased manner.

It is noteworthy that Twisha Sharma, a 33-year-old resident of Noida, Uttar Pradesh, had been married for only five months. She reportedly died under suspicious circumstances at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Her family has alleged that she was subjected to dowry-related harassment and physical and mental abuse by her husband Sarthak Singh and mother-in-law.
