New Delhi, 20 May (H.S.):
At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will undertake a State Visit to India from May 20 to May 23. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, which includes Cyprus’s Foreign Minister Dr. Constantinos Kombos, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades, senior officials, and representatives from the business community.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of External Affairs said that this will be President Christodoulides’ first visit to India in his current capacity. The visit is taking place within a year of Prime Minister Modi’s own visit to Cyprus on June 15–16 last year. That visit marked the first trip by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in more than two decades.
The timing of the visit is significant, as Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, further enhancing the importance of this engagement.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and President Christodoulides will hold discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, including trade, investment, technology, education, culture, mobility, defence and security, artificial intelligence (AI), fintech, innovation, and research. The two leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues, as well as cooperation in multilateral forums.
Prime Minister Modi will host a luncheon in honour of the visiting President. President Christodoulides will also meet President Droupadi Murmu, who will host a State Banquet in his honour. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is also scheduled to meet the Cypriot President.
During his visit, President Christodoulides will also participate in a business forum being held in Mumbai.
India and Cyprus share long-standing close and trusted relations. Both countries will celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations on February 10, 2027. This visit reflects the continued positive momentum in India–Cyprus relations and a shared commitment to deepening the partnership in the broader context of India–European Union cooperation.
