New Delhi, 19 May (H.S.):
Indian Railways has approved the 54-kilometre Kiul–Jhajha third-line project at an estimated cost of ₹962 crore to expand capacity and enhance operational efficiency on the Howrah–Delhi rail corridor. The route is a vital part of Indian Railways’ high-traffic network, and the project is expected to strengthen passenger and freight movement across eastern and northern India.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Kiul–Jhajha third line will significantly increase capacity on the Howrah–Delhi corridor and improve train punctuality and operational flexibility. The additional track will ensure seamless movement of passenger and freight trains and will promote regional industrial growth and commercial connectivity.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the existing double line between Kiul and Jhajha is operating under pressure beyond its optimal capacity. With traffic on this route expected to grow in the coming years, additional infrastructure was deemed necessary.
The proposed third-line project will raise line capacity, reduce congestion, and facilitate smoother movement of passenger and freight services. It will improve connectivity between Patna and Kolkata, and strengthen freight links to major industrial and logistics hubs in northern and eastern India.
This rail section plays a crucial role in connecting Kolkata and Haldia ports with Raxaul and Nepal. It also handles heavy freight traffic linked to major industrial installations such as Bara STPP, Jawaharpur STPP, and Birgunj ICD.
The railways said the project will provide long-term infrastructure support to meet rising traffic demand along this strategic corridor. Increased carrying capacity and improved connectivity are expected to make logistics operations more efficient, ease congestion, and render rail transportation between key economic centres in eastern and northern India more reliable.
