New Delhi, 14 May (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a whirlwind five-day diplomatic odyssey from May 15 to 20, 2026, spanning the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy. The itinerary kicks off in the UAE, where PM Modi will engage in high-stakes discussions with President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. At the forefront are bilateral energy collaborations, pivotal as India navigates its burgeoning energy demands. The UAE, India's third-largest trading partner and seventh-biggest cumulative investor over the past quarter-century, hosts a robust 4.5 million-strong Indian diaspora.

Conversations will invariably pivot toward elevating the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership—bolstered by deep political, cultural, economic, and interpersonal bonds—while addressing the welfare of expatriate Indians and amplifying trade-investment synergies.

Transitioning seamlessly to Europe,PM Modi's second stop in the Netherlands (May 15-17) marks his return since 2017, at the behest of Prime Minister Rob Jetten. Amid calls on King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, the agenda will galvanize cooperation in defence, security, innovation, green hydrogen, semiconductors, and a nascent Strategic Partnership on Water.

With bilateral trade surging to USD 27.8 billion in 2024-25 and the Netherlands ranking as India's fourth-largest FDI source (USD 55.6 billion cumulatively), this early-tenure outreach signals a resolute intent to broaden multifaceted ties.

In Sweden (May 17-18), hosted by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg—echoing Modi's 2018 India-Nordic Summit appearance—talks will dissect bilateral relations holistically. Priorities include catapulting trade (USD 7.75 billion in 2025) and Swedish FDI (USD 2.825 billion from 2000-2025), alongside ventures in green transitions, artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate action, and cultural exchanges.

A spotlight moment: Modi and Kristersson addressing the European Round Table for Industry alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, amplifying India's appeal to pan-European business titans.

Norway (May 18-19) heralds Modi's inaugural visit—and India's first prime ministerial trip in 43 years—coinciding with bilateral engagements and the India-Norway Business and Research Summit. Meetings with King Harald V, Queen Sonja, and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre will harness the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement to invigorate trade (USD 2.73 billion in 2024) and tap Norway's Government Pension Fund investments (nearing USD 28 billion in Indian markets). Emphasis on clean-green technologies and the blue economy promises to chart new horizons.

The tour crescendos with the 3rd India-Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19, uniting leaders from Norway, Denmark (Mette Frederiksen), Finland (Petteri Orpo), Iceland (Kristrún Frostadóttir), and Sweden. Building on 2018 Stockholm and 2022 Copenhagen precedents, it will infuse strategic depth into collaborations on technology, renewables, sustainability, blue economy, defence, space, and Arctic affairs—while leveraging the India-EU FTA and India-EFTA TEPA to escalate USD 19 billion trade and forge resilient supply chains.

Capping the journey in Italy (May 19-20), at Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's invitation—following Modi's 2024 G7 sojourn—engagements with President Sergio Mattarella will operationalize the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029. This encompasses trade (USD 16.77 billion in 2025), FDI (USD 3.66 billion since April 2000), defence, clean energy, innovation, science, and people-to-people linkages.

Overall, Modi's expedition—against the backdrop of the freshly inked India-EU FTA—portends a quantum leap in India's European and West Asian engagements, cementing its stature as a pivotal player in global commerce, innovation, and sustainability.
