Puducherry, 09 April (H.S.):
Voting began on a peaceful note across the Union Territory on Thursday as polling got underway for all 30 Assembly constituencies. Early hours witnessed a steady stream of voters at booths, reflecting strong public interest in the electoral process. Officials confirmed that polling arrangements were functioning efficiently, with no untoward incidents reported.
The polling process commenced at 7 a.m. in all 1,099 polling stations spread across Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. Voters will be able to cast their ballots until 6 p.m., with authorities ensuring adequate facilities for a smooth voting experience.
Election authorities expressed confidence that the polling would continue without disruptions, citing extensive preparatory measures. Special focus has been placed on voter convenience, crowd management and accessibility, particularly for elderly voters and persons with disabilities.
The election is being closely watched as it will determine the future of the current coalition government led by the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) under Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, with support from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Multiple parties are in the fray, setting the stage for a competitive contest.
Chief Electoral Officer P. Jawahar said elaborate arrangements had been made to ensure free and fair polling. A total of 4,836 polling personnel have been deployed, along with 2,791 police personnel and 30 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).
Security has been heightened across the Union Territory, especially in sensitive areas. Authorities have identified 209 polling stations as vulnerable and five as critical, with micro-observers and CAPF personnel closely monitoring these locations.
To facilitate voters, around 2,000 student volunteers have been deployed to assist senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Officials also maintained strict enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, seizing inducements worth ₹8.4 crore during the campaign.
With over 82% turnout recorded in 2021, officials remain hopeful of a strong voter response this time as well.
