Thiruvananthapuram, 09 April (H.S.):Kerala is set to experience a surge in temperatures today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert in eight districts due to above-normal heat conditions. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious as rising temperatures combined with high humidity are expected to cause significant discomfort in several parts of the state.
According to the IMD, Palakkad district is likely to record the highest temperature, touching up to 38°C. Meanwhile, Kollam, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta districts are expected to experience temperatures around 37°C. In Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Thrissur districts, the mercury could rise to approximately 36°C, which is 2 to 3 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.
Weather officials noted that the combination of high temperatures and humid air is likely to result in hot and uncomfortable conditions, particularly in lowland areas. However, relatively milder conditions may prevail in hilly regions.
In addition to the heat warning, the IMD has also forecast the possibility of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning across parts of the state until Saturday. This could bring temporary relief from the heat in some areas.
Health authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, and taking extra care of vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged the public to follow official updates and safety guidelines as Kerala navigates a spell of intense summer heat.
