Biswanath, 05 April (HS): Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, stating that legal action would be initiated against him and claiming that “one day, the Chief Minister will apologise before the people of Assam.”
Addressing a public rally in Biswanath on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi described Assam as the land of Srimanta Sankardeva, Ajan Pir, Zubeen Garg and Tarun Gogoi, emphasising the state’s rich cultural and social harmony. He praised Zubeen Garg for promoting unity and stated that the singer never hurt sentiments but instead worked to bring people together.
The Congress leader also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Assam is being treated like an “ATM” by the Centre and the state government. He accused the BJP of handing over land to industrialists such as Gautam Adani and Baba Ramdev, questioning whether such land belonged to them or to the people and farmers of Assam.
In a controversial remark, Rahul Gandhi claimed that US President Donald Trump could “destroy Modi’s career whenever he wants,” further intensifying his criticism of the BJP leadership.
He also accused Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of corruption and alleged that they evade discussions on issues related to industrialists. Gandhi questioned the BJP’s unfulfilled promise of granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities.
Outlining Congress’ promises, Rahul Gandhi said the party would provide financial assistance to women, including a one-time support of ₹50,000 for small ventures, regularise land for 10 lakh families and introduce health insurance coverage of up to ₹25 lakh. He also assured that the long-pending demand for ST status for six communities would be fulfilled.
Earlier, the meeting began with a welcome address by Gaurav Gogoi. Gandhi urged voters to support Congress and the opposition alliance, stating that their vision aligns with the inclusive ideals of Assam’s cultural icons..-----------
